Research the German Car Industry â⬠BMW Essay
Within this dossier I am going to research the German Car Industry, firstly I am going to give a little background history to Germany, then Berlin where the person will be based to work for BMW. Then finally I will tell the person about BMW, their history and his/hers role within the company. I have decided to use a 50/50 approach to this dossier by this I mean 50% will be on the country i.e. Germany and Berlin and 50% will be on the company. I have chosen this because I feel, and will explain throughout this piece of work that it is very important to know the ways and the customs of a country as well as the industry in which you are going to work. I will try through this piece of work to help the person ââ¬Ësettleââ¬â¢ in quicker and be comfortable of his/her surroundings. If someone feels happy in his/her surroundings then this should spread into his/hers work life and by focusing more on the country I feel this could happen quicker than usual. (Source: German tourist office) Economy Overview: After the fall of the Berlin Wall, progress towards economic integration between eastern and western Germany is clearly visible, yet the eastern region almost certainly will remain dependent on subsidies funded by western Germany until many years to come. The staggering $390 billion in western German assistance that the eastern states have received since 1990 ââ¬â 40 times the amount in real terms of US Marshall Fund aid sent to West Germany after World War II ââ¬â is just beginning to have an impact on the eastern German standard of living, which plummeted after unification. Assistance to the east continues to run at roughly $100 billion annually. Although the growth rate in the east was much greater than in the west, it will take 10-15 years for the eastern states to match western Germanyââ¬â¢s living standards. The economic recovery in the east is led by the construction industries which account for one-third of industrial output, with growth increasingly supported by the service sectors and light manufacturing industries. Eastern Germanyââ¬â¢s economy is changing from one anchored on manufacturing to a more service-oriented economy. Western Germany, with three times the per capita output of the eastern states, has an advanced market economy and is a world leader in exports. The strong recovery in 1994 from recession began in the export sector and spread to the investment and consumption sectors in response to falling interest rates. Western Germany has a highly urbanized and skilled population that enjoys excellent living standards, abundant leisure time, and comprehensive social welfare benefits. It is relatively poor in natural resources, coal being the most important mineral. Western Germanyââ¬â¢s world-class companies manufacture technologically advanced goods. The regionââ¬â¢s economy is mature: services and manufacturing account for the dominant share of economic activities, and raw materials and semi manufactured goods constitute a large portion of imports. Read more: Swot Analysis of BMW Current Issues in Germany Currently, Germany is facing post reunification economic problems caused by a number of factors including the flow of refugees into Germany, the flow of East Germans leaving to West Germany, and the poor economic conditions left in East Germany by the Communists. In the East, the unemployment rate remains at about 18%, despite efforts to lower it. Within the political arena Germany remain to be one of the fieriest opponents to the war on Iraq and diplomatic relations between themselves and the USA and Britain and have hit a low point, but given time and talking these issues will be resolved. Germany has changed a lot since the end of the Second World War. This is a country that lay in ruins, the majority of its infrastructure was destroyed, millions of its citizens were killed and its economy was in tatters. However nowadays nearly 60 years after the war Germany brought itself back into world economics. Germany remains to be one of the main players in global economics, its many industries i.e. the car industry have lifted it from the depths of recession to become a strong economy. About Berlin Located in the north-east of Germany and with a population of 3.5million, one third is covered by woodland, parks and waterways. Despite efforts to become a city of the future, Berlin has also made every effort to preserve its history. Berlin is home to the largest construction project Europe has seen since World War II, the city is redefining itself. The construction of the Berlin Wall on Aug 13, 1961 set the seal on the cityââ¬â¢s division and separated its people. The city celebrated on Nov 9, 1989 when the Berlin Wall was torn down. After the reunification in 1990 Berlin became residence of the Federal Government, which held its first plenary session in the redesigned Reichstag on Apr 19, 1999. The Reichstag with its new glass dome became an attraction for both Berliners and tourists from all over the world. The new millennium was celebrated with a magnificent party at the Brandenburg Tor. A lot has changed in Berlin since then. And Berlin will keep changing. Museums Berlinââ¬â¢s museums present art works of international appreciation. More than 170 museums invite to see collections of the world culture such as the Pergamonaltar or the bust of Nofretete, painting works from Giotto and Breughel over Caspar David Friedrich and Picasso to contemporary artists. Spectacular new buildings like the Filmmuseum or the Jewish Museum and the reopening of great museums like the Old National Gallery enhance the fascinating range of Berlinââ¬â¢s museums. Nightlife Night owls with stamina can also give their undivided attention to the interesting range of pubs around Savignyplatz in Charlottenburg. The area consists of a great number of restaurants and bars where everyone can meet the stars of television or Berlinââ¬â¢s culture and political scene. Here is the melting pot that combines symbolically the former west and the new centre to a harmonic construction. Especially the younger crowd is attracted to the Pariser Straà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½e. At this location you will find taverns, bars, American diners, Mexican restaurants and very modern and stylish discos. During the summer life concentrates on the street in form of many chairs and tables that invite us to rest. In the middle of this street the well-maintained Ludwigkirchplatz with its rich areas of green providing a relaxing shadow is located. For someone who is going to live in a strange country it is important if they make themselves aware of certain customs within that country or a certain part of the country i.e. Tipping in a restaurant the bill you receive at a hotel, restaurant, cafe or bar often includes a service charge already. A tip is an indication of your satisfaction ââ¬â 5% is average, whereas 10% indicates exceptional service. Tip taxi drivers about 5%, and porters and others who assist you with baggage one Euro per item. Berlin is one of the liveliest capitals in the world; it has huge volumes of history attached to it German Car Industry Germany is the birthplace of the automobile ââ¬â in 1887 Karl Benz designed a couch fitted with an internal combustion engine, and the modern car was born. In 1901 Germany was already producing 900 cars a year; today the total is as high as 10 million. The industry employs about 1.26 million people, and over half of all the cars produced in Germany are exported. Today Daimler-Chrysler, the result of the merger between Daimler-Benz, Germanyââ¬â¢s largest manufacturers of cars, and the American Chrysler Corporation, is the third largest car manufacturer in the world. The names of the car companies tell interesting, often personal stories. For example, when August Horch designed his first car, another car manufacturer operated under Horchââ¬â¢s name, so he was forced to find a new name for his company. He selected the Latinised version of the German word Horch, listen, and came up with Audi. Mercedes was originally the name of an early Daimler sports car ââ¬â it was named after a clientââ¬â¢s daughter. The car industry has remained one of the pillars of the German economy. Currently about 1.26 million people are employed in the car industry. In 1998 5.73 million cars were produced and 3.27 million of these were exported. Daimler-Benz is the largest of the three major players, Volkswagen being the second and BMW the third. The car industry is, however, facing the biggest changes since the introduction of mass production. With ever changing markets and fluctuating economies mass production in the old sense may be on its way out. Cars that are not sold quickly turn into huge losses for their company. This may be avoided by introducing more flexible production systems. The idea is to produce cars according to customerââ¬â¢s wishes and, more importantly, when they want to buy them. This idea is based on BTO (built-to-order) systems. In Germany about 60% of cars are built according to orders placed directly or indirectly with the factory. The next step, mass customisation, would suit both customer and manufacturer. The problem is to develop a production system that can adapt quickly to a changing demand and supply at a lower cost. Together with American and Japanese car makers Volkswagen is involved in the so-called ââ¬Å"3DayCarâ⬠project which tries to apply the mass customisation model initiated by the computer manufacturer DELL to the car industry. Considering the size of German car manufacturers like Volkswagen and Daimler-Benz, these new production methods may mean major changes on a huge scale. Another change is the increasing size of car manufacturers. The five leading corporations worldwide are General Motors, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota and Volkswagen. The worldwide overproduction of cars and fluctuating markets has meant that all five have been involved in a number of acquisitions and mergers in order to consolidate their position as global players. DaimlerChrysler is now said to be interested in Mitsubishi Motors and Volkswagen in BMW. German Car Exports to Ireland In the year 2000 about 25% of all new cars bought in Ireland were of a German brand. (55.160 vehicles). The largest number of imports, 37 700 cars, were by Volkswagen. BMW BMW, which stands for Bayerische Motoren-Werke, started off as a manufacturer of aircraft engines. After the First World War the production of these engines was forbidden by the Peace Treaty of Versailles. BMW therefore began to manufacture motor cycles. Later on BMW bought a company which was licensed to produce a car called Dixi. The cars sold very well despite the economic downturn of the late 1920s and when the licence expired BMW started designing their own models. The company began building six cylinder cars and sporting models. With every new model BMW introduced went a sporting model since taking part and winning races was the best publicity a car manufacturer could get. During the war the company received large orders to build aircraft engines. Because of its contribution to the arms industry of the 1930s and 40s the BMW plants were banned from production for three years after the Second World War. Two of the companyââ¬â¢s plants, in Berlin and Eisenach, were in the Russian sector and later were nationalised by the East German government. The factory in Munich remained, but since it had only produced motor cycles car production did not start until 1951. For a while the company tried to both mass-produce as well as develop prestigious models which put it under considerable financial strain. In 1959 BMW nearly went bankrupt but managed to keep going. Between 1955 and 1962 the company produced Isetta cars under licence. This led BMW to work with Italian designers which proved to be very successful for the company. A major reorganisation of the company took place in the early Sixties under the auspices of major shareholder Herbert Quandt. The success of these changes allowed BMW to built bigger cars and offer a more comprehensive range in the following years. In todayââ¬â¢s competitive markets the quality of the marketing and advertising of a product is just as important as the quality of the product itself. An example of this is the latest advertising campaign by BMW in the US. Instead of TV and cinema ads BMW financed five short films which can be viewed on the internet. The films are made by internationally renowned directors and are part of a series called The Hire. All films feature a chauffeur and his car, a BMW. Guy Ritchieââ¬â¢s film, the first of the series, stars Madonna and was an immediate success. Since the start of the US campaign three months ago (May 2001) six million people have viewed the films and BMW is now considering a similar project in Germany. Surveys showed that most potential customers are far more likely to surf the internet than to look at TV or magazine ads. The campaign, which is typical for so-called Image-Advertising, indicates that the perception of a car is nowadays as important as the actual product, if not more so. Human resource policy The human factor is the No. 1 criterion in determining a companyââ¬â¢s relative success. Accordingly, we see our associates not as a cost factor, but instead as an essential performance factor. This is especially true because any human resources policy that is not oriented towards the associate will always lead to negative cost effects in the long run, thus proving uneconomical. As a future-oriented company, we seek to pursue an exemplary, creative and associate-oriented human resources policy, making significant contributions to business success through our human resources activities. Reflection On Oppression - 707 Words
An issue in my own life that I needed to face that lead from reflection to action was an abusive relationship. Linked to the spiral model of learning the first step taken by myself was identifying i belonged to an oppressed group. Admitting both the situation, along with belonging to a group of oppression was extremely challenging for me. To overcome these issues I needed to reflect on it. Once again, this is challenging, as reliving it is hard, and being honest with oneself is hard. During my reflection of my own experience there were large amounts of fear, fear to admit it as that means not only has something bad occurred to me, but that my partner had been ââ¬Å"badâ⬠through his treatment towards me. I needed to confide in those I trusted and relate to those who have experience the same situation to gain an understanding of possibilities for changing the situation. My goal was to move forward from feeling like a victim, or hating myself for allowing what had happened to occur. The public administration at the state level here in Rhode Island is that the citizens are collecting unemployment or receiving assistance from the state. New policies have been put into place that requires anyone receiving assistance to work for the first thirty days and a set number of hours each week. In my experience of working with these individuals that will only do what is required and nothing more than that. We have many diverse populations within any workplace and must always adhere to the rules and regulations set before us as to not offend anyone. The field of public administration will always be tough employment. From past experiences even when you are helping it could be looked upon as showing favoritism is you time is not utilized wisely. If one individual feels he is not getting the same as another, then complaints are filed. This is said to be true in the divers e populations and every populations helps there own. The journey to my grave Free Essays
It was a bright Thursday afternoon and it was finally time for recess. I hade just survived double English and all my energy had been drained from trying to stay awake, let alone paying any attention to what was going on in lesson. I made my way out of the classroom and walked down the long corridors of the school building towards my locker- alone. We will write a custom essay sample on The journey to my grave or any similar topic only for you Order Now It had only been a week and a half since I had started high school and I hadnââ¬â¢t yet managed to make any friends but I had expected it, since I had started a month later than all the other first years. Everyone seemed to already have been divided into his or her groups. I liked keeping to myself, as it was crystal clear I wasnââ¬â¢t needed. After placing my books in my locker I made my way to the school canteen. As always there was nothing appealing in the canteen that tempted me so I just helped myself to a chocolate muffin. Having paid for my lunch I made my way to the table in the corner of the hall where I sat everyday- alone. I placed my muffin on the table and sat down to eat. The canteen was filling up and I noticed that every table in the canteen had different types of people seated at it; the cheerleader table was at the front where all the cheerleaders sat. Beside them, was the Ashley table where Ashleyââ¬â¢s group sat, which beside herself included her two best friends. The sixteen tables behind them were where the ordinary people sat and ate their lunch. Last but not least there were the geeks who sat behind everyone else. Finally there was me and I sat alone, behind everyone else. Since the day I had started high school know one had spoken to me in a friendly manner but only teased me and called me names, so it was a huge surprise when Ashley and her group came up to my lunch table wanting to ask me something. Heyâ⬠¦ uh â⬠¦ Megan. How are you? ââ¬Ë Oh my god I couldnââ¬â¢t believe it. Ashley was actually talking to me. I had to reply, I mean it wasnââ¬â¢t everyday Ashley came up to talk to me. ââ¬ËUh â⬠¦ yesâ⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢mâ⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢m fine. Thanks for asking. ââ¬Ë I could feel my face getting hot, I couldnââ¬â¢t believe I was so tongue tied but I wasnââ¬â¢t to blame anyone who went to my high school would have been in the state I was in. ââ¬Ë Helen can you meet us in the girls lavatory and make sure no one knows you are coming to see us. Its best if know one knows. ââ¬Ë It was the happiest days in my life. Having finished my muffin I rushed down to the girls lavatory beaming with joy. Once reaching the girls lavatory I pushed open the door and searched for Ashley and her group. There was know one there so I decided to wait. A little while later they came in and checked if all the cubicles were empty once they were satisfied Ashley asked me the most unexpected question ever. ââ¬ËListen Helen me and the girls were thinking of making our group a foursome and who else would be better to have than you. So do you want to join us? ââ¬Ë Of course I did. Who wouldnââ¬â¢t? ââ¬ËYehâ⬠¦ sureâ⬠¦ I mean I would love to be part of your group. ââ¬Ë This was the happiest day of my life, apart from the fact that she didnââ¬â¢t know my name properly. I was going to be part of her group and not any old group but Ashley Roberts group. ââ¬ËKool, but as you know this isnââ¬â¢t any old group. This is my group,ââ¬â¢ she really emphasized on the word ââ¬Å"myâ⬠, ââ¬Ëand it is the best in the whole school. So you have to go through a simple initiation test, donââ¬â¢t worry we all went through it. If you pass, it means you are worthy of joining our group and if not you go back to what you were. ââ¬Ë I should have known there would be a catch. I guess it was worth the try, if I passed I wouldââ¬â¢ve officially been part of the best group in the whole school. ââ¬ËAll you have to do is come to my house tomorrow and stay the night. Katie and Serenaââ¬â¢ Her two best friends, ââ¬Ëwill also be there. We will tell you what will consist in your test tomorrow when you come round. You can go now and oh yeh I will give you my address tomorrow but remember just donââ¬â¢t tell anyone, and I mean anyone about our little discussion. ââ¬Ë The final bell of the day rang and it was finally time to go home. I placed my books into my bag and made my way for home. After ten minutes I reached home and let myself in. I could hear my mum rattling the dishes in the kitchen and also talking to my little baby brother. ââ¬ËHi mum, Iââ¬â¢m home. Guess what happened today. You wont believe it. ââ¬Ë I was dying to tell her that I had made a new friend and that I might have a chance to join her group. ââ¬ËGo on tell me what happened today. ââ¬Ë ââ¬ËWell this girl, Ashley Roberts who is the popular girl in school asked me to join her group but she said I have to pass a little test to see if I am capable of being in their group so she invited me to her house tomorrow for a sleepover. Can I go? I could see the look on her face she wasnââ¬â¢t sure about the whole idea. ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m not quite sure about this test thing. ââ¬Ë she replied with a worried look on her face. Iââ¬â¢m sorry to say this to you but I cant let you go this time I mean you hardly even know her. Iââ¬â¢m sure she will understand. ââ¬Ë Understand. She thought she would understand. My mother had absolutely no idea about this whole thing. If I didnââ¬â¢t get into this group my life would have been over. I would have had to stay a loner all throughout my high school life. ââ¬ËBut mumââ¬â¢ I couldnââ¬â¢t let her win this battle not this time my whole high school life was at stake here. You canââ¬â¢t do this. You donââ¬â¢t understand. You have to let me go, please. ââ¬Ë my eyes were burning as tears blurred my vision. I couldnââ¬â¢t let her see that she had won so I stormed out of the room slamming the door shut on my way out. I was enraged by my mothers decision of not letting me go to Ashleyââ¬â¢s house. She just didnââ¬â¢t understand that I had to go. It was about my future. I had made up my mind I was going to go to Ashleyââ¬â¢s house no matter what. There was too much at stake here. I needed to make mum realise that I could take care of my self and nothing would have happened if she had let m go. The next day I came back from school and went straight to my room to pack my clothes for the sleepover. I was going to go to the sleepover no matter what. After packing my things I went downstairs to eat dinner and then told mum I was going to bed early because I was not feeling well. I went to my room and picked up my bag and plucked up the courage to sneak out of the window. I did it I was out I realised that if I stood around I would get caught so I quickly took out Ashleyââ¬â¢s address and made my way to her house. It was about 6 blocks away from where I lived and took me about twenty minutes to get there. Once I reached her house it was seven thirty. Before I could actually knock on the door Ashley came and opened the door. Without saying a word she took me to her room as if she didnââ¬â¢t want anyone to know I had arrived. There I met both Katie and Serena too. I was told by Ashley that I had to keep my voice down as her parents werenââ¬â¢t aware that I was present in the house. For some odd reason I began to regret that I had come to Ashleyââ¬â¢s house. I was here now and I had to go through with whatever the girls had in plan as my initiation test. Ok listen Helen. We have all decided what your test should be based upon. Let me warn you though it is going to be quite hard. The girls donââ¬â¢t think you will be up to the challenge. ââ¬Ë It was Ashley talking. Oh no the thing I had been dreading most. Well at least I wont have to do anything in school which could embarrass me. So I guess the girls had spared me the humiliation. ââ¬ËJust tell me what you want me to do. Donââ¬â¢t worry Iââ¬â¢m up to it. By the way my name is Megan. ââ¬Ë I had come this far I wasnââ¬â¢t going to let myself down now. ââ¬ËThatââ¬â¢s the spirit. Well we have decided to test how brave you are so we have decided that tonight being a Friday the thirteenth your test will be that you have to go to the near by grave yard and sit next to a grave for a whole hour, and before leaving place a flag, which we will give to you, on the surface of the grave so that we know that you actually stayed there. As proof that you did stay there for a whole hour we will give you a stop watch which you will start as soon as you sit next to the grave and bring back to us when your time is up. ââ¬Ë I got the shock of my life when I heard what I had to do. I should have stayed home and done as I was told, I guess I now realised that my mum was right. By coming here I have only landed my self into more trouble. I couldnââ¬â¢t let myself down. I wanted to be in the group so desperately now. Ashley told me that we were going to leave at exactly eleven thirty so that we would be there a little before twelve. While I would be inside the grave yard Katie, Serena and Ashley would go back home and then come back to collect me. They also told me I had to sit next to a specific grave, it was Jack Hunters. Rumours have it that on every Friday the thirteenth anyone who sits next to Jacks grave, and is still there by midnight, has his or hers soul pulled out from their body and into jacks grave. Many people have tried to sit next to jacks grave but have never returned. ââ¬ËCome on its time to go. ââ¬Ë Called out Katie in a silent whisper. It was time for my test and no matter what I wasnââ¬â¢t going to back out from it. The four of us crept downstairs and made our way out of the house without making a single noise. The street was dark with only a few light lamps in the far distance which shone some light on the path we were taking. We finally reached the main gates to the entrance of the grave yard. I was told to climb over the gates. When I had climbed over I realised that I was on my own from here on. Serena told me that the grave I was meant to sit next to was at the far end and will fall on my right hand side. I saw the girls making their way back and I knew I couldnââ¬â¢t follow them. I had to lead in the opposite direction. There were still five minutes to twelve as I sat down and made my self comfortable. All this jack and the whole soul pulling thing was all made up, I knew it. How can a dead person who mind you doesnââ¬â¢t even have a soul of his, own possibly take another persons. It was insane, it was a story which had crossed its limits. None of it was true. It couldnââ¬â¢t be. Could it? At this stage I was talking to myself. I began questioning my own beliefs. I looked at my watch to see how much time had gone by. I couldnââ¬â¢t believe it, only two minutes had passed since I had started the stopwatch which was given to me. All of a sudden I felt something behind me, as if it were breathing heavily onto my neck. I was too afraid to look back. I wanted to run. Run free from this place-I was being held down. Something had paralysed me, I couldnââ¬â¢t move. I tried harder- nothing happened. In my struggle to break free from the web of danger I was in I caught a glimpse of the time and it was exactly twelve. It was happening to me. My soul was being sucked into Jacks grave. My ribs were hurting me so badly. My whole body felt as if it were being forced into a tiny hole. My whole body was overlapping it self and I could do nothing. I needed air. I was running out of air. When I tried breathing in big gashes of air to maybe prolong my death, nothing happened. All I could do was wait for my life to end. I remembered mum, I wondered what she was going to go through. I should have listened to her. She was right but I was so arrogant and selfish that I had to have my way. I hope she could forgive me as all she had in the world were me and my little brother. There it happened. Exactly on that thought. I breathed in my ounce of air. Jack finally got what he had wanted-his soul, my soul. I Megan Taylor till today regret entering the gates of the grave yard I entered three years ago, and till this day I regret it. Little did I know at the time that the friend I thought I had gained, planned this malicious act of indecency. How to cite The journey to my grave, Papers

The unpassing horse Essay Example For Students
The unpassing horse Essay The poem, The Cyclist, by Louis MacNiece is a set about an insightful analogy on life. The poem is full of vivid imagery and beauty that conjures up delightful memories, and an overriding feeling of freedom. Through the poem MacNiece reminds us that we must truly treasure the brief but special moments of our childhood and life. MacNiece, through the poem, expresses life as a single sentence. His analogy is that life is a sentence, the main sentence represents our mechanical everyday work life but between the main sentence, between the horizons brackets there lies our free time and leisure. However these brackets are only five minutes of our life, these moments are scarce, just as this boys summer will pass so quickly by. So, from this we feel that the poet is telling us, life is short, grasp the sweet golden moments while you can, live in the brackets. The image of the unpassing horse further supports his message of savouring life. This image is used all throughout the poem as a comparison of being frozen in time, frozen in the brackets and working life. The description Blazoned in chalk suggest that the poet is talking about a large existing carving in Sussex, South England on the chalk downs. Perhaps a memory of his childhood summer vacations. The run on lines in the poem create a lazy mood to the poem. We feel the smooth languidness of the lines as we read the poem and almost feel the heat. This mood promotes the theme of freedom expressed in the poem. The very first word Freewheeling conjures up a sense of carefree enjoyment. The delightful description the wind he causes in passing/ Cools the sweat of his neck, making him one with the sky expresses the absolute freedom and bliss of summer. The description of being one with the sky is very sublime; it demonstrates the openness and endless opportunities of being in the brackets. The imaginary world of childhood is put forth in the idea of grasping summer in the handlebars of the boys bicycle. We almost feel that we are in the imaginary world, the perfect world to this child. Similarly, we also come across a delightful idea of catching summer with butterfly nets in the third stanza. This imagery further promotes the idea of freedom in the poem. The boy is described as a parenthesis, this further suggests that he is not in the real world; he is not part of the main sentence not for now anyway. The line Is to be picked up later but these five minutes suggests that these five minutes lived between the brackets are scares and need to be savoured. The enchanting imagery of the dragonfly is the poets representation of how effortless summer is. The vivid imagery of a dragonfly, effortlessly taking off, horizontal is a metaphor for the work-free atmosphere of summer, and the pleasure this is. The next line Underlining itself in a silver peacock light seems to be referring back to the sentence of life, that the parenthesis between the brackets is underscored, suggesting that it is looked forward to. The second stanza if full of intense imagery that sets adds much colouring to poem. He commences it with a reference to the unpassing horse, he describes it as being glaring, glaring white conveying the attractiveness. This along with the personification of the horse carving: moves within his brackets suggests that as the horse is also at the downs, it is moving, and enjoying the summer too, perhaps also expressing a desire to obtain the horse, obtain the complete freedom of summer vacations. The heat of summer in emphasised through the description of the grasshoppers. The word boils is used very cleverly, as it conveys both the bubbling, bursting movement of the tiny grasshoppers as well as the heat of the day. .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e , .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e .postImageUrl , .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e , .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e:hover , .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e:visited , .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e:active { border:0!important; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e:active , .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u91f7bfc52be32486cab384fad1a5977e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: How does Heaney explore the issues of background and identity in his early poems, Digging and Follower EssayThe description of the pebble is also very clever, it moves from the focus of one small object and then expands, using the numbers of small pebbles on the dirt road as a representation of the number of boys riding in the downs. The words heat-wave and surf are used to suggest that the dirt track is like dry water, as the hot air ripples over the ground, waves of dust are created. This in our minds also creates an image of the beach on hot summers days, and the refreshing feeling of the wind on our sweaty face as our hair is thrown back. The issue of nostalgia is also present in the poem. Through the use of imagery the poet presents this idea in the third stanza. The boys chase summer, they long for it to last. The description of the little red ball is a reference to a cricket ball, this instantly suggests the poet is English as cricket is a popular sport in England. The idea of trapping summer is also suggested in the description of the cricket ball; the idea that you can strike it into the deep, and hold it forever. The next two references speak of the pleasure of soaking in summer. The idea of being lathered in cricket creams in summer is an extremely insightful one, suggesting the stickiness of the cricket creams onto the boys body due to the intense heat and perspiration. We are again brought to the idea of freedom though the idea of drinking summer through closed eyelids. We can just imagine the image of a boy lying in downs with his eyes closed and just soaking in the summer rays. This description is approached by three unpunctuated run on lines, this allows the sentences to drag and promote this free, lazy feeling. The first interruption of the lazy mood of the poem is at the semi-colon in the third stanza. The first image of our mechanical work lives is given by the word bell, this is most probably representing a school bell sounding the start of school. The Left-right-left symbolises the orderly restrictiveness of school and schoolwork, restrictions that are not faced during the summer. The idea of being absolutely lost in summer is conveyed by the words his forgotten sentence, representing the idea of forgetting completely about the worries and pressures of school life, forgetting the main sentence. Reaching the valley represents reaching the end of something, in this case the end of the summer vacation. The words the boy must pedal again is a metaphor of the need for the boy to work again, to live back in the main sentence. Yet, even with this restrictive need, the idea of nostalgia is present as for ten seconds more the boy can move as the horse in the chalk, meaning for a little time longer the boys mind is still free and ingrossed in summer, just as the horse in the chalk moves forever within the brackets unbeginningly and unendingly regardless of the tenses and final clauses of the main sentence. Thus the poet is expresses the idea of continually wishing for summer, even when it has gone. The poem The Cyclist exposes many ideas. It is a perceptive representation of our lives, and especially the carefree nature of childhood. Even at the end of the poem, the poet expresses his childish aspiration of living forever between the horizons brackets just as the chalk horse is. However, through the poem he does also show the reality that we cannot live our lives like the chalk horse, for the chalk horse is forever between the brackets as it is only an image, a dream, so we must savour what five minutes of freedom we have.

International Involvement free essay sample
Most Americans in the mid-1800s were not interested in further territorial expansion. In fact, many Americans opposed any type of imperial rule as it went against Americaââ¬â¢s political policies and threatened to bring in people of different cultures and religions; something that American already had enough of. However, several European countries were quickly expanding into Africa and Asia, threatening United Statesââ¬â¢ access to global markets. This new threat, combined with a collective belief in Darwinism, sparked American interest in global expansion. Americaââ¬â¢s international involvement between 1890 and 1905 definitely affected global politics as the United States became increasingly concerned with the affairs of smaller, less stable countries as well as gaining a more assertive global presence. This new approach toward global politics forever changed Americaââ¬â¢s once indifferent attitude. The events following the American Revolution kept the United States occupied up until the mid-1800s. The United States was largely inactive in global politics as its leaders were more concerned with building the foundations of the country rather than expanding beyond the North American borders. The United States and its economy became very dependent on foreign trade. Almost simultaneously, European powers began seizing territory in Africa and Asia. Despite Americaââ¬â¢s indifference towards any involvement in global politics, the rising power of these European countries was concerning. Darwinism, a belief in the survival of the fittest, prompted Americans to consider further expansion to prevent being shut out of global markets that supported the American economy. Others were convinced that much of the world was uncivilized and it was the United Statesââ¬â¢ duty to spread the Anglo-Saxon civilization. Some were strictly focused on national power and insisted that the United Statesââ¬â¢ global power was dependent upon a strong navy. Yet there were still some who maintained that the United States must respect the rights of other nations (Irvin, 2007). Carl Shurz, aà well-known politician, also held this peaceful perspective. He wrote, ââ¬Å"In its dealings with other nations (the United States) should have scrupulous (careful) regard, not only for their rights, but also for their self-respect. With all its resources for war, it should be the great peace power of the world. It (America) should seek to influence mankind, not by heavy artillery, but by good example and wise counsel. It should see its highest glory, not in battles won, but in wars prevented. It should be so invariably (always) just and fair, so trustworthy that other nations would instinctively turn to it as the great preserver of the worldââ¬â¢s peaceâ⬠(Irvin, 2007). Nonetheless, the United Sates pursued imperialism in the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Spanish-American War was a conflict that President William McKinley wanted to avoid. Anti- Spanish propaganda instigated Americaââ¬â¢s interest in the war and pressure from the Democratic Party and several industrialists finally persuaded the president to engage in what eventually lead to the fall of the Spanish Empire. The war originally began as an American intervention of the Cuban War of Independence however tensions escalated quickly after the American battleship Maine mysteriously sank in the Havana harbor (Brinkley, 2012). The Treaty of Paris ended the war and gave the United States control of the Philippine islands, Guam, and Puerto Rico (Brinkley, 2012). The United States has already shifted the balance of power in their first confrontation beyond North American borders. Now in control of outside territories, the United States was faced with the responsibility of maintaining its new colonies. This proved to be very difficult in the Philippines, where rebellious groups of guerilla warriors waged war on American soldiers. The Philippine War went on for four years and caused thousands of causalities, both native and American alike. The rebels maintained that they had valid leader who would lead a stable government and they did not need help from Spain or the United States. The war ended in 1902 when the United States finally agreed to assist in the Philippines independence from colonial rule (Brinkley, 2012). ââ¬Å"America did not attempt to expand its territories after the Philippine War as imperialism did not proved to be more dangerous than it was lucrativeâ⬠à (Landsberry, 2010) . Instead, its leaders decided to expand the countryââ¬â¢s power and by increasing its influence over foreign nations. President Roosevelt was very interested in international involvement. His affairs became known as the ââ¬ËBig Stick Policyââ¬â¢ (Irvin, 2007). The name came from his famous quote ââ¬Å"I have always been fond of the West African proverb: ââ¬ËSpeak softly and carry a big stick; you will go farâ⬠(Irvin, 2007). This attitude was one of quiet assertiveness. President Roosevelt, like Carl Shurz, believed that it was the United Statesââ¬â¢ duty to set a good example for the rest of the world. He took it a step further by insisting that Americans intervene in the affairs of other countries that were too weak or unstable to protect themselves. He focused on countries located on the Western Hemisphere in accordance with the Monroe Doctrine; a document forged by President Monroe that assured the European countries of the United Statesââ¬â¢ dominance over the Western Hemisphere. President Rooseveltââ¬â¢s promise to protect weaker nations is known as the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine (Irvin, 2007) . Although the United States may have not been entirely successful at imperialism, it did make its mark on global politics. It disabled the Spanish Empire and changed the American reputation from indifferent and isolated to assertive and strong. President Roosevelt reiterated the Monroe Doctrine, making the world aware of the United Statesââ¬â¢ presence in foreign affairs. In the short time from 1890 to 1905, the United States of America transformed its identity in preparation for the war ahead.
